Midland Christian Elementary boasts an active, engaging environment where instructional decisions are intentionally made to support the growth of the whole student - spiritually, academically, and socially-emotionally.
Classes are self-contained through Grade 2. Starting in Grade 3 classes are departmentalized.

Curriculum
Programs and curriculum for children in Elementary include the following:
Daily chapel and Bible instruction rooted in the Word and consistent with the Christian faith.
Pre-Kindergarten: We follow the Texas Pre-Kindergarten Guidelines to provide our students with a foundation that guides the growth of children in all aspects of development. The Texas Pre-Kindergarten Guidelines offer detailed descriptions of expected behaviors across multiple skill domains that should be observed in four to five-year-old children to the end of their Pre-Kindergarten experience.

Kindergarten - Grade 5:
The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) provide the framework for curriculum and drive instruction. The TEKS outline academic benchmarks students are expected to master as they progress through each grade level.
English Language Arts and Reading:
MCS utilizes a Comprehensive Literacy approach to reading and writing, including whole group lessons, guided small group instruction, independent practice, and individual conferences (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt into Reading). Our approach to reading incorporates the five key concepts as identified by the National Reading Panel: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension.
Math: Saxon Mathematics curriculum focusing on the incremental development of new skills with implementation into daily practice
Science: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Science curriculum encourages student-directed learning to deepen understanding of concepts and inspire investigation, exploration, and problem solving
Social Studies: Savvas Social Studies curriculum embraces democratic values, community, and cultural diversity while deepening the understanding of civic issues, connected communities, and global conversation
Physical Education - P.E. classes meet daily starting in Kindergarten-Grade 4. In fifth grade, students will attend P.E. three days a week, alternating with Fine Arts.

Choir and Band
Fourth grades students will have one semester of choir and one semester of band
Fifth grade students will choose an elective prior to the start of the school year. Students will be scheduled in band OR choir for the duration of the year. Students will attend band/choir three days a week.
